Woman champion who mobilized resources for the village…

Purbi Lagunaha is about 66 kilometres distant from the district headquarter. There are 423 households belonging to different castes. Around 65% population belong to scheduled caste and minority. Most of the population’s staple occupation is labour work. There is one govt middle school located at the northern side of the village. Being a little distant, some of the children could not go to this school. PEARL project being operational in this village since July 2020. Bridge education centre (BEC) started in early 2021.

On the day of 27th March 2022, weather was little cold. Everybody was sleeping in the village. There were high flames of fire in the village. Village people woke up and get scared. After sometime, it was known to everyone that the source of fire is the house of Mr. Sakeem Gaddi. Fire was so furious that nobody could dare to even reach close to it. One after another house was on fire. Nobody was able to think what to do in such a situation.

One of the members of self-help group – Mrs. Zaibun Nisha made a call to Mr. Munna Yadav (Coordinator institution building & entitlements) and asked for the phone number of fire extinguisher.

08 houses were burnt and completely damaged till the fire fighting vehicle of the govt reached the spot. The property of about seven hundred thousand was completely lost by the poorest people of this village. Rest of the houses were saved by the fire fighting vehicle. Mrs. Zaibun Nisha (self-help group member) showed her prudence and saved many houses and lives of the village people. Those who lost their houses were the direct beneficiaries of the project. 

Meanwhile, Mr. Anirudh Mahto – project coordinator talked to the project lead – Mr. Nadeem who in turn talked to Goonj – a New Delhi based organization and asked about the help. 08 affected families then were provided with plastic sheet for the temporary shelter, bucket, soaps, food grains- soyabean, pulses, gram, clothes and other day to day usable items. This was an instant help and support mobilized by PEARL project staff from different organization. Not only this but also Mrs. Zaibun Nisha also talked to PRI members and mobilized 20 kilograms rice and INR 500 to each fire affected families. Mrs. Zaibun Nisha showed the true spirit of a champion and contacted to block development officer and mobilized plastic sheet for the shelter and Rs. 1000 to each fire affected family. Mrs. Zaibun Nisha contacted to Circle Officer (CO) and submitted the application for housing facility. Mrs. Seema said, “Zaibun Nisha is a true champion who saved many houses in the village and mobilized various resources and still she is making endeavours for the village people”.
